What the official sources describe
- The current site lists macOS, Windows and Linux
- PSD and PSB workflows advertised by Tenzen
- Local selection models, CLI and MCP described by the vendor
Before you choose
- Free pricing does not establish an open-source license.
- PSD fidelity and editable objects still need file-specific testing.
What is Photon Studio?
Photon Studio is an image editor from Tenzen. Its official introduction, dated September 13, 2026, positions it around a familiar desktop editing workflow and local assistance. The current product page lists macOS, Windows and Linux. Platform availability has evolved since the introduction, so use the current official download entry rather than an older launch article.
The product page describes Photon as free. That statement concerns this editor; it should not be confused with pricing for the wider Tenzen suite. We have not established a source-code license, so we describe it as a free editor rather than an open-source one.
Where it could fit your workflow
The strongest reason to investigate Photon is a desktop workflow that combines layers and PSD/PSB files with local selection models. Local selection assistance is a particular feature claim, not proof that every AI feature or service works offline. Check the actual tool, model download and network behavior before choosing it for a disconnected environment.
Tenzen also describes CLI and MCP support. These may matter for repeatable tasks and assistant-driven workflows, but an advertised interface is not an installation tutorial. Our launch guide does not claim that we have run its commands or connected an MCP client.
Moving a Photoshop document
Start with a duplicate PSD that represents your real work. Check whether text stays editable, masks retain their edges, layer effects look right and smart objects keep useful structure. Save under a new name and reopen that result in Photoshop. This separates importing a file from preserving a workflow.
Choose Photon for a trial if local selection and desktop editing address a real task. For an open-source requirement, inspect PhotoCraft or Patchy instead. For a quick browser-based PSD task, Photopea offers a different starting point. These are workflow choices, not a tested performance ranking.
Start with text, masks, effects and a save-and-reopen round trip. Record the exact build.
